Quick Concept

Elasticity of Demand –

Elasticity = Responsiveness

Types of Elasticity of Demand

Demand Elasticity

1. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED)

2. Income Elasticity of Demand (YED)

3. Cross Elasticity of Demand (XED)
1. Price Elasticity of Demand

Ed = % Change in Quantity Demanded ÷ % Change in Price

Law of Demand ప్రకారం Price మరియు Quantity Demanded సాధారణంగా opposite directionsలో మారతాయి.

Competitive Exam Convention

Degrees of Price Elasticity of Demand

Elasticity Degree Meaning
Ed = 0 Perfectly Inelastic Price మారినా Quantity Demanded మారదు
0 < Ed < 1 Relatively Inelastic Quantityలో proportionate change తక్కువ
Ed = 1 Unitary Elastic Proportionate changes
Ed > 1 Relatively Elastic Quantityలో proportionate change ఎక్కువ
Ed = ∞ Perfectly Elastic ఒక నిర్దిష్ట ధర వద్ద Demand అత్యంత responsive
Perfectly Inelastic Demand – Ed = 0

Perfectly Inelastic Demand – Ed = 0
Price
Quantity →
D
Graph Memory:

Perfectly Inelastic Demand → Vertical Demand Curve
Relatively Inelastic Demand – Ed < 1

Demand Relatively Inelastic.

Price
Quantity Demanded

Ed = 5 ÷ 10 = 0.5

Demand → Inelastic
Unitary Elastic Demand – Ed = 1

Price Change = 10%

Quantity Change = 10%

Ed = 10 ÷ 10 = 1
Relatively Elastic Demand – Ed > 1

Price Change = 10%

Quantity Change = 20%

Ed = 20 ÷ 10 = 2

Demand → Elastic
Perfectly Elastic Demand – Ed = ∞

Perfectly Elastic Demand – Ed = ∞

Less than 1 → Inelastic
∞ → Horizontal
Percentage Method of Measuring Price Elasticity
Ed = Percentage Change in Quantity Demanded ÷ Percentage Change in Price

Percentage changes

% Change in Q = (Change in Q ÷ Original Q) × 100
% Change in P = (Change in P ÷ Original P) × 100
Numerical Problem – 1

Price Elasticity of Demand ఎంత?

Solution:

Ed = 20% ÷ 10%

Ed = 2
Answer: Ed = 2

Demand → Relatively Elastic
Numerical Problem – 2

Price 20% తగ్గినప్పుడు Quantity Demanded 10% పెరిగింది. Elasticity ఎంత?

Ed = 10 ÷ 20

Ed = 0.5
Answer: Demand is Relatively Inelastic.
Point Elasticity Method

Ed = (dQ / dP) × (P / Q)

Discrete changes ఉన్నప్పుడు approximate form:

Ed = (ΔQ / ΔP) × (P / Q)
Arc Elasticity of Demand

Ed = [(Q₂ − Q₁) / ((Q₁ + Q₂)/2)] ÷ [(P₂ − P₁) / ((P₁ + P₂)/2)]
Exam Difference:

ఒక Point వద్ద → Point Elasticity

రెండు Points మధ్య → Arc Elasticity
Total Expenditure Method

Consumer చేసే Total Expenditure:

Total Expenditure = Price × Quantity Demanded

Price Change Total Expenditure Elasticity
Price ↓ TE ↑ Ed > 1
Price ↓ TE unchanged Ed = 1
Price ↓ TE ↓ Ed < 1
Exam Trap

2. Income Elasticity of Demand

Consumer Incomeలో వచ్చిన percentage changeకు ప్రతిస్పందనగా Quantity Demandedలో వచ్చిన percentage changeను Income Elasticity of Demand అంటారు.

Ey = % Change in Quantity Demanded ÷ % Change in Income
Income Elasticity మరియు Goods
Income Elasticity Interpretation
Ey > 0 Normal Good
Ey < 0 Inferior Good
Ey = 0 Income changeకు Demand స్పందించదు
Income Elasticity – Numerical Example

Consumer Income 20% పెరిగినప్పుడు ఒక Good Demand 30% పెరిగింది. Income Elasticity ఎంత?

Ey = 30 ÷ 20

Ey = 1.5
Income Elasticity positive కాబట్టి ఇది Normal Good.
3. Cross Elasticity of Demand

Exy = % Change in Demand for Good X ÷ % Change in Price of Good Y
Cross Elasticity – Interpretation
Cross Elasticity Goods Relationship Example
Positive Substitute Goods Tea – Coffee
Negative Complementary Goods Tea – Sugar
Approximately Zero Unrelated Goods Unrelated products
Very Important Memory Trick

Cross Elasticity Positive → Substitutes

Cross Elasticity Negative → Complements
Cross Elasticity – Numerical Example

Exy = 20 ÷ 10

Exy = +2
Cross Elasticity Positive కాబట్టి Tea మరియు Coffee Substitute Goods.
Determinants of Price Elasticity of Demand
1. Availability of Substitutes

2. Nature of Commodity

3. Number of Uses

4. Proportion of Income Spent

5. Time Period

6. Possibility of Postponement
